Proposals have been put forward for a new skyscraper to house the new School of Design on the campus of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Aspirationally named the Innovation Tower, the design is the work of renowned architect Zaha Hadid and will take up the last remaining plot left on the north side of the campus that over its 40 year history has become made up of many visually differing buildings.

Made up of the usual glass and steel, the tower is similar in shape to a monolithic eroded rock with the glass and steel working as veins running through it.

Mainly made up of dark glazing, here and there some floors are picked out by a lighter windows which looks like it was too long for the floor plate size and so has been folded downwards over lower levels creating shading for the interior and adding an irregularity to the appearance of the scheme.

Space is the order of the day in this proposal starting with the podium levels which extends deep into the building and will be totally column less and will be occupied along with two other levels by shops, cafes and a museum.

From the entrance a long escalator wends its way upwards through four levels of openly glazed workspaces, almost like a gangway into an alien spaceship.

These open work spaces which are numerous throughout the project will work almost as showcases and will allow the public views of the building at work whilst still maintaining the necessary boundaries needed in a learning environment.

The space theme is continued with the use of voids and atriums throughout the building that bring in natural light, and channel the natural circulation of fresh air into the very bowels of the structure.

If given the go ahead it is hoped the new addition to the campus could be up and running by 2011.
